This series documents the Ukrainian Saturday Schools in Edinburgh: the Pro100 Ukrainian Saturday School and Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School.
Both schools provide Ukrainian children displaced by the war with the opportunity to learn the Ukrainian language, culture, and history alongside their mainstream education. The schools play an important role in helping young people maintain a connection to their heritage while building new lives in Scotland.
These photographs were made possible through the trust and generosity of the parents, children, and staff who welcomed me into their community. They form part of a wider documentary project developed in collaboration with the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, documenting Ukrainian culture and community life across Scotland.
The Pro100 Ukrainian Saturday School began as a homework club with 15 children in 2023 before launching official classes at Leith Academy in January 2024. These photographs were taken on the final day of the school term in summer 2026.
The Ukrainian St Margaret’s Saturday School was the first of its kind in Scotland, established in August 2023. It is run by Hanna Tekliuk, who came to Scotland in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine. These photographs were taken at the beginning of term in Autumn 2026.
